Double Diamond Burton Pale Ale traces its origins to 1876, when Samuel Allsopp & Sons of Burton-on-Trent first brewed the English pale ale. The name derived from the two overlapping diamond-shaped symbols used to mark cask barrels at the brewery. Following the 1934 merger of Allsopp's with Ind Coope, the brand received the resources to scale production, and by 1958 it had become Britain's best-selling bottled beer. The 1960s and 1970s marked its golden era as one of the highest-selling keg beers in the United Kingdom, propelled by heavy television and billboard campaigns featuring the iconic slogan "A Double Diamond works wonders" and the later tagline "I'm only here for the beer." Carlsberg UK discontinued off-trade sales in April 2003, though the brand persisted as a keg beer. After decades of dormancy, Double Diamond was officially relaunched in 2025 by Kirkstall Brewery, returning to shelves with a 3.8% ABV recipe in a bold red, yellow, and orange identity that revives its nostalgic heritage for a new generation.
