SPAR was founded in 1932 in the Netherlands by Dutch wholesaler Adriaan van Well as a voluntary chain of independent grocers. Originally launched as DESPAR—an acronym of the Dutch slogan Door Eendrachtig Samenwerken Profiteren Allen Regelmatig (All Benefit from Joint Co-operation Regularly)—the brand embodied van Well's belief that independent retailers could achieve more together than alone. In the late 1940s, the name was abbreviated to SPAR to facilitate international expansion, and in 1947 Belgian wholesalers became the first licensees outside the Netherlands. SPAR International was established in 1953 in Amsterdam to support global growth, and by 1956 the brand had entered the United Kingdom. Today, SPAR operates over 13,800 stores across 48 countries, serving 14.7 million customers daily.

The brand's core products are food retail and grocery solutions, spanning neighbourhood supermarkets, convenience stores, city stores, forecourt shops, and campus outlets. Its portfolio includes fresh produce, ready-to-eat meals, bakery items, and daily grocery essentials, all tailored to local community needs through independently owned and operated stores.

From its founding philosophy of collaborative independence, SPAR has evolved into the world's largest voluntary food retail chain. In 2022, the brand celebrated its 90th anniversary with the positioning "the world's local food store of choice," reflecting a journey from a single Dutch market to a global retail network that continues to uplift and grow communities around the world.
