Nokian Tyres Oyj is a Finnish tyre manufacturer headquartered in Nokia, Finland, with roots stretching back to 1898 when Suomen Gummitehdas Oy (Finnish Rubber Works) was founded. Car tyre production began in 1932, and the company made automotive history in 1934 by inventing the world's first winter tyre, the Kelirengas. Two years later, it launched the legendary Hakkapeliitta brand, named after Finnish cavalry renowned for winter warfare. In 1988, the tyre division spun off from Nokia Corporation to become Nokian Tyres plc. The company operates the world's only permanent winter tyre testing facility in Ivalo, Finnish Lapland, above the Arctic Circle.
