SuperValu was launched in 1979 by the Musgrave Group, Ireland's largest food wholesale and retail company, as the rebranding of the existing VG chain. With just 16 stores initially, mainly in Munster, it became Ireland's first supermarket brand and won its place in the hearts of the nation through a combination of value, range, availability, food leadership, and innovation. Over four decades, the brand has grown to over 223 stores across the island of Ireland, all independently owned by local retailers operating under the SuperValu banner. In 2011, the company acquired Superquinn, and in 2014 the stores were rebranded to SuperValu.

The brand's core products are grocery retail and food solutions, spanning fresh produce, meat, bakery, dairy, frozen foods, drinks, household items, and personal care. Its portfolio includes award-winning private labels such as Daily Basics, SuperValu Signature Tastes, and SuperValu Range, alongside specialty lines including dairy-free, meat-free, and gluten-free options.

From its earliest days, SuperValu has built its identity on the enduring slogan "Real Food, Real People" and the philosophy of being deeply connected to local communities. In 2012, the brand launched the "Hello" campaign to introduce its own-brand range, followed by the award-winning "We Believe" campaign in 2013, organising communications under three pillars: local, quality, and value. In 2025, the brand unveiled the campaign "The Difference is Real," celebrating real expertise, quality, and care. This journey reflects a shift from a small Munster supermarket chain to Ireland's most trusted leader in fresh food.
