SUSE was founded on 2 September 1992 in Nuremberg, Germany, by Roland Dyroff, Burchard Steinbild, Hubert Mantel, and Thomas Fehr as Gesellschaft für Software- und Systementwicklung mbH (S.u.S.E.). Initially a Unix consultancy, the company pivoted to distributing Linux, releasing its first proprietary distribution, S.u.S.E. Linux 1.0, in 1994. In 1996, version 4.2 became the first fully in-house developed release. In 2003, Novell acquired SUSE for $210 million, and the brand was restylised as SUSE in 2003. After passing through Attachmate (2011) and Micro Focus (2014), EQT Partners purchased SUSE in 2019, establishing it as an independent entity. The company went public on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange in 2021.

The brand's core products are open-source enterprise software solutions, including SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES), SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop (SLED), and the community-driven openSUSE distribution. Its portfolio has expanded to encompass container management through SUSE Rancher, storage solutions, and Edge computing platforms, serving over 60% of the Fortune Global 500.
