CA Technologies (formerly Computer Associates International, Inc. and CA, Inc.) was an American multinational corporation founded in 1976 by Charles Wang and Russell Artzt in New York City, originally established as a joint venture with a Swiss software company to sell CA-SORT, a mainframe data utility. The company pioneered the direct-to-market software model, using telephone sales and credit card funding to build a foundation that would transform the enterprise software landscape. Through aggressive acquisitions—including UCCEL ($800 million, 1987), Legent ($1.78 billion, 1995), and Platinum Technology ($3.5 billion, 1999)—Computer Associates became the world's largest independent mainframe software vendor and the second software company after Microsoft to reach $1 billion in annual revenue (1989). A major accounting scandal in the early 2000s, involving the "35-day month" revenue manipulation scheme, led to CEO Sanjay Kumar's 12-year prison sentence and $2.2 billion in restatements. The company rebranded as CA, Inc. in 2006 and then CA Technologies in 2010, pivoting toward cloud computing, DevOps, and security. In November 2018, semiconductor giant Broadcom acquired CA Technologies for $18.9 billion, integrating its software portfolio into Broadcom's infrastructure software division.
