Nidec Corporation (日本電産株式会社, Nihon Densan Kabushiki-gaisha) was founded on 23 July 1973 by Shigenobu Nagamori in Kyoto, Japan. Initially a small motor manufacturer with just four employees, the company specialised in hard disk drive (HDD) spindle motors, quickly capturing the global market. In 1979, it developed the world's first 8-inch HDD spindle motor, and by the 1990s it had become the dominant supplier to the global HDD industry. The company expanded aggressively through acquisitions, including Emerson Electric's motor business (2010), Whirlpool's compressor business (2012), and Secop (2017). In 2019, it acquired Omron's automotive electronics division, and in 2020 it purchased Mitsubishi Heavy Industries' machine tool business. Today, headquartered in Kyoto, Nidec is the world's largest manufacturer of small precision motors, employing over 100,000 people across 40 countries.

The brand's core products are electric motors and related components, including HDD spindle motors, brushless DC motors, fan motors, automotive motors, industrial motors, and motor drives. Its portfolio also encompasses power generation equipment, compressors, and machine tools, serving industries from IT and automotive to home appliances and renewable energy.

From its earliest days, Nidec has built its identity on the philosophy of "Passion, Enthusiasm, Tenacity" (熱意・熱情・執念) and the mission to be "the world's number-one comprehensive motor manufacturer." In 2021, the company introduced the slogan "Spin the World", reflecting its journey from a tiny Kyoto startup to a global leader in motor technology that literally spins the digital and physical world.
