Johnny Rockets was founded on June 6, 1986, by Ronn Teitelbaum on Melrose Avenue in Los Angeles, California. Inspired by the 1940s-style malt shops of his childhood, Teitelbaum created a nostalgic diner experience complete with red vinyl booths, chrome counters, and countertop jukeboxes. The name fuses Johnny Appleseed with the Oldsmobile Rocket 88, embodying classic Americana. The first location drew crowds until 5 a.m., serving 600 to 700 guests daily. Over the decades, the chain expanded to over 275 locations across 26 countries, evolving from a single 20-stool counter to a global franchise. In 2020, Johnny Rockets was acquired by FAT Brands, Inc.
