Qwest Communications International, Inc. was a major American telecommunications carrier founded in 1988 by Philip Anschutz. Originally established as SP Telecom to lay fiber-optic cables along railroad rights-of-way, it was renamed Qwest in 1996 and went public in 1997. The brand's early slogan, "Ride the Light," emphasized its technological edge as a next-generation network builder. Under CEO Joseph Nacchio, Qwest rapidly expanded through acquisitions, including the landmark $48 billion merger with US West in 2000, transforming it into a dominant local and long-distance provider serving 14 western and midwestern states. In 2002, the company shifted to the "Spirit of Service" philosophy, repositioning around customer care. Though its stock once soared to over $60 per share, the company faced challenges in the early 2000s and was ultimately acquired by CenturyLink in 2010, with the Qwest brand retiring in 2011.
