Ethiopian Airlines, formerly Ethiopian Air Lines (EAL), is Ethiopia's flag carrier wholly owned by the government. Founded on 21 December 1945 and commencing operations on 8 April 1946, the airline expanded internationally in 1951 and became a share company in 1965, adopting its current name. Headquartered at Bole International Airport in Addis Ababa, it serves over 125 passenger destinations and 68 freighter destinations across five continents. Operating a modern fleet of Boeing 787 Dreamliners and Airbus A350s, the carrier provides scheduled passenger services, cargo transport, and aviation training and maintenance solutions. Brand messaging evolved from early positioning "The Wonderland Route" to the current motto "The New Spirit of Africa", embodying its status as Africa's largest airline by passengers, destinations, fleet size, and revenue. Ethiopian joined the Star Alliance in December 2011, further strengthening its global network.
