Founded in 1925 by Harris Hanshue as Western Air Express, the airline began with a U.S. Post Office air mail route from Los Angeles to Salt Lake City. It rapidly expanded through acquisitions including Standard Air Lines and National Parks Airways, becoming a dominant force in western U.S. aviation. The airline entered the jet age in 1960 with Boeing 707s and later operated an all-jet fleet of 707s, 727s, and 737s. In 1987, facing financial difficulties, Western Airlines merged with Delta Air Lines, and its operations were fully integrated by April 1987.
