Garuda Indonesia (officially PT Garuda Indonesia (Persero) Tbk) is the national airline of Indonesia. Tracing its origins to January 26, 1949, when it operated its first commercial flight as "Indonesian Airways" from Calcutta to Rangoon, the carrier adopted the name "Garuda Indonesian Airways" later that year, a name bestowed by President Soekarno from a Dutch poem. It became a state-owned enterprise in 1950, initially operating a fleet of DC-3s, Catalinas, and Convair 240s. The airline expanded to serve Hajj pilgrims in 1956 and launched European services to Amsterdam in 1965. A comprehensive rebranding in 1985 shortened the name to Garuda Indonesia, followed by a further identity refresh in 2009. After its "Quantum Leap" modernization programme, the carrier earned Skytrax 5-star status and joined the SkyTeam alliance in 2014. Today it operates Boeing and Airbus aircraft to over 90 destinations, offering scheduled passenger services, cargo transport, and dedicated pilgrimage flights. Brand messaging has evolved from "The Airline of Indonesia" to the current forward-looking positioning "Look Forward", embodying Indonesian hospitality.
