Samuel Adams was founded in 1984 by Jim Koch in Boston, Massachusetts, as the flagship brand of The Boston Beer Company. Named after the American Founding Father and brewer, the brand launched its first beer—Samuel Adams Boston Lager—on Patriots' Day in 1985, based on a family recipe from Koch's great-great grandfather Louis Koch.
