AkzoNobel was formed in 1994 through the merger of Dutch conglomerate Akzo NV and Swedish firm Nobel Industries AB, creating one of Europe's largest chemical and paint manufacturers. Akzo's roots trace back to 1792, when Willem Sikkens founded a lacquer factory in Groningen, Netherlands, while Nobel Industries reunited companies once owned by Alfred Nobel, inventor of dynamite and founder of the Nobel Prizes. In 2008, the company acquired Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI)—one of the world's largest chemical companies—and rebranded itself as AkzoNobel, shedding its pharmaceuticals division to focus on paints and coatings. Today, headquartered in Amsterdam, the company operates in over 150 countries with approximately 33,000 employees, making it the world's largest global paint and coatings company by revenue.

The brand's core products are paints, coatings, and specialty chemicals, spanning decorative paints under iconic brands such as Dulux, Sikkens, and Coral; performance coatings including International marine paints, Interpon powder coatings, and Resicoat heavy-duty solutions; and specialty chemicals for industrial applications. Its portfolio serves industries from aerospace and automotive to consumer electronics and infrastructure.

From its 2008 corporate tagline "Tomorrow's Answers Today"—symbolising forward-looking innovation and collaborative achievement—AkzoNobel has evolved to embrace the purpose "Paint the Future" and the mission to "color people's lives and protect what matters most." This journey reflects a shift from a diversified industrial conglomerate to a focused, sustainability-driven leader in surface innovation.
