Big Bazaar is an Indian retail chain of hypermarkets and discount department stores founded in October 2001 by Kishore Biyani under Future Group. The first store opened in Kolkata, with three additional locations in Hyderabad, Bangalore and Indore launched within 22 days. The brand pioneered organised modern trade in India, positioning itself as a democratic shopping destination that combined the look and feel of traditional Indian bazaars with the choice, convenience and hygiene of modern retail. At its peak, the chain operated over 250 stores across more than 120 cities, offering categories spanning fashion, food, electronics, furniture and general merchandise. Financial difficulties stemming from aggressive expansion and debt led to its acquisition by Reliance Retail in 2022.
Core offerings include the hypermarket format encompassing Food Bazaar supermarkets, fbb fashion outlets, and dedicated sections for electronics, home furnishings and apparel. Brand messaging has evolved from the founding price-leadership promise Isse Sasta Aur Accha Kahin Nahin (Nothing cheaper or better anywhere) used from 2001 to 2011, to the 10th-anniversary positioning Naye India Ka Bazaar (The Bazaar of New India) introduced in 2011. In 2014, the company launched the socially resonant campaign Making India Beautiful, reflecting India’s transformation through 52 weekly television commercials.
