Vigroids is a British liquorice sweet with a distinctive heritage spanning over a century. First created in 1900 by Ferris & Co. Ltd. in Bristol, England, these small black pellets were originally marketed as Nigroids—a name they carried for 110 years before being officially renamed Vigroids in 2010. The sweets were traditionally positioned as a throat lozenge for singers and public speakers, with an enduring slogan promising "for clarity of voice." Made primarily from liquorice juice and blended with subtle notes of menthol, eucalyptus, and peppermint, they contained no sugar and were recommended in moderation due to liquorice's effect on blood pressure. The brand was acquired by Ernest Jackson & Co. in 1974 and also sold under the alternate name Mighty Imps. Though the product was delisted from the manufacturer's website by early 2015, Vigroids remains a notable piece of British confectionery history—a reminder of how even the smallest, most functional sweets can carry a century of cultural evolution.
