Northwest Airlines Corp. (often abbreviated as NWA and stylized as nwa) was a major United States airline founded in 1926 and absorbed into Delta Air Lines, Inc. by a merger. Established as Northwest Airways on 1 September 1926, the airline initially carried mail for the U.S. Post Office Department before launching passenger services in 1927. In 1934 it adopted the name Northwest Airlines, and from 1947 to 1986 it branded itself as Northwest Orient Airlines to reflect its expanding transpacific network, though its registered corporate name remained unchanged. Headquartered in Eagan, Minnesota, the airline developed major hubs at Minneapolis–Saint Paul, Detroit, Memphis, Tokyo–Narita, and Amsterdam Schiphol, and became the largest U.S. carrier across the Pacific Ocean. Its core offerings encompassed scheduled passenger and cargo services, Northwest Airlink regional operations, the WorldPerks frequent-flyer programme, and WorldClubs airport lounges. Northwest was a founding member of the SkyTeam alliance and pioneered innovations including the first clear-air turbulence forecasting system in 1957. After filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 2005, the airline merged with Delta in 2008 and completed brand integration on 31 January 2010. Brand messaging evolved from the 1960s declaration "Northwest Orient: The Fan-Jet Airline" through the 1969 positioning "Some People Just Know How To Fly" to the final-era promise "Now You're Flying Smart", reflecting its journey from a pioneering transpacific carrier to a technology-focused modern airline.
