Pakistan International Airlines (abbreviated PIA) is the national flag carrier of Pakistan, wholly owned by the government. Tracing its origins to 1946 when Orient Airways was founded by M.A. Jinnah to serve the impending independent state, the airline was formally established as Pakistan International Airlines Corporation on October 1, 1955 following a government acquisition and merger. PIA became the first Asian carrier to operate the Boeing 707 in 1960 and the first airline from a newly independent Asian nation to fly to New York in 1962.
