Hanes traces its origins to 1900, when John Wesley Hanes founded Shamrock Knitting Mills in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. His brother Pleasant H. Hanes established P.H. Hanes Knitting Company in 1901, and the two entities merged in 1965 to form Hanes Corporation. The brand pioneered seamless nylon hosiery and became the world's largest producer of women's hosiery by the 1950s. In 1986, the company launched Hanes Her Way, a dedicated women's apparel line that expanded beyond panties into broader intimate and casual wear. The brand's slogans evolved from the 1970s hosiery tagline "Gentlemen Prefer Hanes" to the early 1990s "The lady prefers Hanes," then to the playful "Just wait'll we get our Hanes on you" from 1992 to 1999, and later the celebrity-driven "Look who we've got our Hanes on now." The 2000s brought the "Go Tagless" innovation for T-shirts. After becoming part of Consolidated Foods (later Sara Lee) in 1979, Hanesbrands Inc. spun off as an independent public company in 2006. Today, the portfolio spans men's and women's underwear, socks, hosiery, casualwear, and activewear, with Hanes Her Way remaining a core women's collection.
