Cobra Beer is a British premium lager brand founded in 1989 by entrepreneur Karan Bilimoria in a flat in Fulham, London. Originally brewed in Bangalore, India, using a traditional recipe with barley malt, yeast, maize, hops, and rice, the beer was conceived as a less gassy, smoother alternative to harsh European lagers, designed specifically to complement food—particularly Indian cuisine. After initial success supplying Indian restaurants across the UK, the brand expanded into pubs, supermarkets, and international markets. In 2009, following financial difficulties, Cobra entered a joint venture with Molson Coors, forming the Cobra Beer Partnership. Today the portfolio includes Cobra Premium, King Cobra double-fermented Pilsner, Cobra Zero alcohol-free, Cobra Gluten Free, and Cobra Malabar IPA, brewed in both the United Kingdom and India.

Brand messaging has evolved from the functional claim Ingenious because less gaseous in 2003, to the aspirational Inspired in 2006 and Unusual thing, excellence in 2008. In 2012, the brand embraced its heritage with the campaign strapline Cobra, splendidly Indian, superbly smooth, reinforcing its positioning as a premium, food-friendly lager with authentic subcontinental roots.
