Poundland is a British variety store chain founded in 1990 by Dave Dodd and Steven Smith in Burton-upon-Trent, Staffordshire, originally established as a single-price retailer where every item cost £1. The concept proved immediately successful, and the brand rapidly expanded across the United Kingdom, growing to over 850 stores and serving approximately seven million customers weekly. Core offerings span a wide range of product categories including food and drink, health and beauty, household goods, stationery, toys, and seasonal items, alongside proprietary brands and clearance merchandise. In 2016, the company was acquired by Steinhoff International for £610 million, becoming part of the Pepco Group. The brand also introduced Pep&Co fashion shop-in-shops across hundreds of stores, extending its value proposition into clothing. Brand messaging was historically anchored by the iconic slogan Yes, Everything's £1!, which was later retired as the business evolved into a multi-price format. In 2025, Poundland was sold to Gordon Brothers as part of a strategic restructuring, continuing its mission to deliver exceptional value on the British high street.
