Stage Stores, Inc. was a prominent American department store retailer that specialized in off-price apparel, cosmetics, and footwear, particularly targeting small and mid-sized rural markets. Founded in 1988 and headquartered in Houston, Texas, the high-volume company operated over 700 stores across 42 states under banners including Stage, Bealls, Goody's, Palais Royal, Peebles, and Gordmans. In a major strategic shift, the retailer attempted to pivot entirely to an off-price model by converting its traditional department stores into Gordmans locations. However, plagued by heavy debt and severe disruption from the COVID-19 pandemic, Stage Stores filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in May 2020. Unable to secure a structural buyer, the company underwent a total corporate wind-down and liquidated all of its retail brick-and-mortar locations by the end of 2020.
