Originally founded in 1972 by Roger Allen, Sandra Allen, and Doug Simmons as a mail-order supplier of electronic components from a spare bedroom in Rayleigh, Essex, the company grew into one of Britain's largest electronics retailers, peaking at 217 stores and serving hobbyists, professionals, and everyday consumers. After entering administration in February 2018 and closing all physical locations, the brand was acquired by Maplin Online Ltd (later Digital First Retail) and relaunched in 2019 as a pure-play e-commerce business. Today it offers cables, computing accessories, smart lighting, CCTV equipment, batteries, and electronic components through its online platform.
