The Nine Network (commonly known as Channel Nine or simply Nine) is a major Australian commercial free-to-air television network. Founded in 1956 when TCN-9 Sydney became Australia's first television station, the network was established by John Godson with Bruce Gyngell presenting the inaugural broadcast. In 1959, the National Television Network was formed through the merger of several stations, evolving into the National Nine Network in 1967 and the Nine Network in 1987. The iconic nine-dot logo designed by Brian Sadgrove debuted in 1969. Today, Nine operates as part of Nine Entertainment Co., offering news, current affairs, drama, reality television, sport, and entertainment programming alongside digital platforms including 9Now, nine.com.au, and channels 9HD, 9Gem, 9Go!, and 9Life. In 1997, Nine partnered with Microsoft to launch ninemsn, one of Australia's original online platforms. Brand messaging evolved from the 1972 call "Get the Channel Nine Feeling!" through the iconic 1978 positioning "Still the One!"—borrowed from ABC America and used for nearly three decades—to the 2009 promise "Welcome Home" and the 2017 declaration "We Are The One", before returning to "Still the One!" in 2021.
