Whitbread Brewery was one of the great brewing houses of the London porter boom, founded in 1742 by Samuel Whitbread in London. It became one of the largest breweries in the world during the 18th century, pioneering the mass production of porter beer. By the 20th century, Whitbread had grown into one of the "Big Six" brewers that dominated British brewing, alongside Bass, Allied Breweries, Courage, Imperial Tobacco, and Scottish & Newcastle. The company diversified into hotels and restaurants, acquiring brands such as Beefeater and Premier Inn. In 2001, Whitbread sold its brewing operations to Interbrew (now AB InBev) and exited the beer market entirely, focusing on its hospitality business. The Whitbread beer brand was subsequently discontinued.

Core offerings historically included Whitbread Best Bitter, Tankard, and the iconic Whitbread Pale Ale. Brand messaging evolved from the 18th-century reputation for quality porter to the 20th-century claim Whitbread, the best in the land, reflecting its status as a national institution. The company also used the long-running slogan The Beer of the Big Six during its dominance of the British brewing industry, before its strategic shift away from beer production.
