Löwenbräu traces its origins to 1383, when it was first mentioned in Munich tax records, making it one of the world's oldest continuously operating breweries. The name, meaning "lion's brew" in German, derives from the lion emblem that has adorned the brewery since the 17th century. In 1818, Georg Brey acquired the brewery and transformed it into a modern industrial operation, and by 1863 it had become Munich's largest brewery. In 1921, Löwenbräu merged with Thomasbräu, and in 1997 it became part of Spaten-Franziskaner-Löwenbräu-Gruppe, which was acquired by Anheuser-Busch InBev in 2008. The brewery has brewed at the same Munich location since the 19th century and is one of the six official breweries permitted to serve at Oktoberfest.
