The brewery itself was founded in 1875 by Henry Alfred Wadworth, and in 1885 moved to the iconic Northgate Brewery—a Victorian tower brewery still celebrated for its gravity-fed brewing process. The name 6X derives from the traditional brewery practice of marking cask strength with Xs; the stronger version of the brewery's existing XXXX beer was branded 6X to denote its superior gravity. During both World Wars, government-imposed raw material rationing reduced the beer's strength from an original 6% ABV to the 4.1% it carries today, though the core recipe has remained essentially unchanged since 1943.

The brand's core products are traditional English ales and session beers, led by the flagship 6X—a full-bodied, finely balanced mid-brown amber ale with malty sweetness and fruity hop notes.
