Tyvek traces its origins to 1955, when DuPont researcher Jim White made a chance discovery of a new fiber source while experimenting with polyethylene. A development program was launched, and in 1956 DuPont submitted a patent proposal for strong yarn linear polyethylene. It took several years to perfect the complex flash-spinning manufacturing process invented by DuPont scientist Herbert Blades. In 1965, the new engineered sheet structure was registered under the trademark name Tyvek, and in April 1967 DuPont began commercial production in Virginia, USA. During its first 50 years, this unique invention revolutionised home construction with house wrap, set new standards for personal protective apparel, and became the gold standard for sterile medical device packaging. In 1988, DuPont opened a second production line in Luxembourg, and in 2005 Tyvek became the first manufacturer to claim CE marking for its entire product range.

The brand's core products are flashspun high-density polyethylene fiber materials, including Tyvek building envelope systems (HomeWrap, DrainWrap, StuccoWrap), protective apparel and coveralls, sterile medical packaging, industrial packaging, and graphics and printing media. Its portfolio serves the construction, healthcare, industrial safety, and creative industries worldwide.

From its earliest positioning, Tyvek has embraced the slogan "Protect what's inside" (2005) and the corporate promise "The miracles of science" (2015). Today, the brand carries the mission "For Greater Good™"—reflecting a journey from a chance laboratory discovery to a global symbol of protection, durability, and innovation across diverse industries.
