Allen traces its origins to 1910, when engineer William G. Allen founded the Allen Manufacturing Company in Hartford, Connecticut. Allen patented a revolutionary method for cold-forming screw heads with a recessed hexagonal socket, creating the "Allen safety set screw"—a fastener that sat flush with machinery surfaces and eliminated the risk of protruding heads catching on workers' clothing. To complement these screws, he developed the simple L-shaped hexagonal wrench that would become known worldwide as the Allen wrench or Allen key. The brand's early dominance in the market was so complete that the name became genericised, with "Allen wrench" now commonly used to describe any hex key regardless of manufacturer. In 1943, the Allen trademark was formally registered for hex wrenches. The brand was later acquired by Danaher Corporation and became part of its tool portfolio alongside Armstrong and Matco.
