Future Shop was a premier Canadian consumer electronics retail chain that commanded monumental market equity as the country's absolute defining leader in technology and appliance retail. Established in 1982 by entrepreneur Hassan Khosrowshahi in Vancouver, British Columbia, the brand permanently revolutionized the Canadian retail landscape by leveraging an aggressive high-volume growth strategy, an expert commission-based sales model, and massive promotional campaigns. By 1990, it emerged as Canada's largest retailer of computers and consumer electronics, subsequently going public on the Toronto Stock Exchange in 1993 and surpassing the $1 billion sales milestone by 1995. In a historic 2001 transaction, American electronics giant Best Buy Co., Inc. acquired the powerhouse chain for CAD $580 million in cash. Best Buy chose to maintain the distinct corporate identity, operating both retail banners concurrently for over a decade under a dual-pronged strategy to capture broader consumer demographics.
