📖 Branding Insight & Heritage:
The Home Depot was founded in 1978 by Bernie Marcus and Arthur Blank in Atlanta, Georgia, after the two former Handy Dan executives were ousted in a corporate power struggle. Over coffee in Los Angeles, they sketched a vision for massive warehouse-style stores that would carry virtually everything DIY homeowners and professional contractors needed under one roof. The first two stores opened in June 1979 in the Atlanta suburbs, each approximately 60,000 square feet, dwarfing traditional hardware stores. The company went public in 1981 and joined the New York Stock Exchange in 1984, eventually growing into the world's largest home improvement retailer with over 2,300 stores across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
The brand's core products are home improvement supplies and services, including building materials, hand and power tools, plumbing and electrical supplies, paint, flooring, appliances, lawn and garden equipment, and seasonal items. Its portfolio also encompasses proprietary brands such as HDX and Behr paints, alongside installation and tool rental services.
From the 1993 slogan "Where low prices are just the beginning" to "First in Home Improvement" (2001) and "You can do it. We can help" (2003), The Home Depot evolved to embrace "More saving. More doing" in 2009. In 2019, the brand unveiled its current positioning "How Doers Get More Done," reflecting a four-decade journey from a revolutionary warehouse concept to a global icon of DIY empowerment and professional-grade reliability.
