Cairn India was an Indian oil and gas exploration and production company. Established in 2004, the company made the landmark Mangala discovery in Rajasthan—India's largest onshore oil discovery in more than two decades—which positioned it as a leading player in the country's upstream sector. In 2011, the Vedanta Group acquired a majority stake in Cairn India, and in 2017 the company was merged into Vedanta Limited. Operating as Cairn Oil & Gas, it became India's largest private oil and gas exploration and production company, contributing approximately a quarter of the nation's domestic crude oil production. Its core operations spanned key hydrocarbon basins across Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, and Assam, with interests in over 60 blocks covering approximately 60,000 square kilometres. The company employed advanced seismic and drilling technologies to unlock conventional and unconventional resources, including tight oil and gas, deepwater, and coal bed methane projects. In 2021, the brand was formally disassociated from Cairn Energy PLC, with Vedanta's Cairn Oil & Gas becoming the exclusive owner of the Cairn brand in India.
