Food Lion traces its origins to 1957, when Ralph W. Ketner and partners opened Food Town in Salisbury, North Carolina. The pivotal moment came in 1968 with the introduction of the "Lowest Food Prices in North Carolina" (LFPINC) strategy, transforming the small chain into a regional powerhouse through aggressive price-cutting and volume-driven growth. The brand was renamed Food Lion in 1983, adopting the lion emblem of its Belgian parent Delhaize Group, which had invested in the company since 1974. Its slogans evolved from the early price-focused "Lowest Food Prices in North Carolina" to "Extra Low Prices," then to the community-oriented "Good Neighbors, Great Prices," and ultimately to the modern "Easy, Fresh and Affordable... You Can Count on Food Lion Every Day" and "This is Our Home. That's Our Food Lion." The portfolio spans groceries, fresh produce, meat, bakery, and private-label lines including My Essentials and Nature's Promise.
