Tracing its roots to the 1912 founding of Northern Indiana Public Service Company (NIPSCO), the modern entity was established in 1987 as a holding company and renamed NiSource Inc. in 1999. Through its Columbia Gas and NIPSCO subsidiaries, it serves approximately 3.5 million natural gas customers and 500,000 electric customers across Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Kentucky, and Maryland. The company operates one of the largest natural gas distribution networks in the United States, spanning nearly 60,000 miles of pipeline, alongside electric generation, transmission, and distribution services in northern Indiana.
