TBS (originally Turner Broadcasting System) is an American basic cable channel with origins tracing back to 1967 as Atlanta UHF station WJRJ-TV. In 1970, media mogul Ted Turner acquired the station, rebranding it as WTCG with the promotional slogan Watch This Channel Grow. In 1976, Turner pioneered the "superstation" concept by distributing the channel nationally via satellite, making it one of the first local stations to reach a nationwide cable audience. The network was renamed WTBS in 1979 and later streamlined to TBS. Core offerings today encompass comedy programming, Major League Baseball and NBA coverage, and feature films. In 2004, TBS adopted the positioning Very Funny to distinguish itself from sister channel TNT's drama focus, anchoring its identity around sitcoms and original comedy series. The channel has served as the broadcast home for iconic programming including Seinfeld, Friends, and Conan. Today, as part of Warner Bros. Discovery, TBS remains one of the most widely distributed cable networks in the United States, blending classic comedy syndication with sports and original content.
