Banco de Sabadell, S.A. (Catalan: Banc Sabadell) is a Spanish multinational financial services company. Founded in 1881 by a group of businessmen in Sabadell with an initial capital of 10 million pesetas, the bank began by financing local wool and coal mining industries before pivoting exclusively to financial services in the early 20th century. After overcoming a crisis of confidence in 1926, the bank established a reputation for good governance and steady growth. Territorial expansion began in 1965 with its first branch outside Sabadell, followed by expansion to Barcelona, Madrid, and London by the late 1970s. The 1996 acquisition of NatWest España marked its first major non-organic deal, while the 2001 IPO and 2003 purchase of Banco Atlántico propelled it into Spain's top tier. Following the 2008 financial crisis, the bank acquired Banco Guipuzcoano, Banco CAM, Banco Gallego, and Lloyds' Spanish business, tripling its size. In 2015, it acquired British bank TSB and established operations in Mexico in 2016. Today, it is one of Spain's largest banking institutions, offering retail, corporate, private, and investment banking services alongside mortgages, insurance, and asset management.
