Halifax (previously known as Halifax Building Society) is a British bank operating as a trading division of Bank of Scotland, itself a wholly owned subsidiary of Lloyds Banking Group. Founded in 1853 as the Halifax Permanent Benefit Building and Investment Society in Halifax, West Yorkshire, it merged with the Halifax Equitable Building Society in 1928 to become the Halifax Building Society, growing to become the UK's largest building society by 1913. In 1997, it demutualised and became Halifax plc, with over 7.5 million customers becoming shareholders—the largest extension of share ownership in UK history. The bank expanded through acquisitions including Clerical Medical Fund Managers in 1996 and Birmingham Midshires Building Society in 1999, and launched the telephone and internet bank Intelligent Finance in 2000. In 2001, it merged with Bank of Scotland to form HBOS, and in 2009 became part of Lloyds Banking Group. Today, Halifax is the UK's largest provider of residential mortgages and savings accounts, offering current accounts, credit cards, personal loans, insurance, and investment products. Brand messaging evolved from the 1979 positioning "Always giving you extra" through the 2001 HBOS-era call "the new force in banking" to the 2019 relaunch strategy "Making It Happen", reflecting its enduring focus on customer value and innovation.
