Macquarie Group Limited is an Australian multinational independent investment bank and financial services company. Founded in 1969 in Sydney as Hill Samuel Australia Limited by Ernest Stanley Owens, the company began as a subsidiary of the British investment house Hill Samuel & Co. In 1985, it secured an Australian banking license and rebranded as Macquarie Bank, named after early Australian governor Lachlan Macquarie. Listed on the Australian Stock Exchange in 1996, the company reorganised as Macquarie Group Limited in 2007. Today, it operates across more than 30 markets worldwide with over 17,000 employees. Its core business encompasses four operating groups: Macquarie Asset Management, the world's largest infrastructure asset manager; Banking and Financial Services serving retail and business clients; Commodities and Global Markets providing risk and capital solutions; and Macquarie Capital offering advisory and investment services. The group also operates the Green Investment Group, a leading specialist green investor.
