Golden Skillet is an American fast-food restaurant chain founded in 1964 by C.W. Guthrie in Richmond, Virginia. Originally developed as a fried chicken recipe for the Richmond Room restaurant at Thalhimers department store, the brand gained popularity and opened its first standalone location in 1968. The chain built its reputation on pressure-cooked fried chicken prepared in pure peanut oil, delivering a signature crispy exterior and tender interior. Under the slogan Tender as Quail! Tasty as Pheasant!, Golden Skillet expanded across the United States, Canada, and Japan, reaching over 200 locations by the early 1980s. After founder Guthrie’s death in 1981, the company was acquired by Dairy Queen, which struggled to maintain the brand’s momentum. Today, only a handful of locations remain, primarily in Virginia, serving as nostalgic time capsules of a once-mighty Southern fried chicken empire.

Brand messaging was anchored by the iconic tagline Tender as Quail! Tasty as Pheasant!, which captured the premium quality and distinctive flavour of its pressure-cooked chicken.
