The Carphone Warehouse Limited was a British mobile phone retailer founded in 1989 by Charles Dunstone from £6,000 savings in London. Originally conceived as a chain offering simple, impartial advice to consumers navigating cellular phone contracts, the company grew into Europe’s largest independent mobile communications retailer, operating over 1,300 stores across ten countries. Outside the UK and Ireland, the business traded as The Phone House. The company sold mobile phones, contracts, and pay-as-you-go services from all major operators, alongside value-added services such as photo printing. In the 1990s, the brand achieved cultural prominence through campaigns featuring the Stereo MCs track Connected. In 2014, it merged with Dixons Retail to form Dixons Carphone, and in 2021 the Carphone Warehouse brand was retired as the business unified under the Currys identity.
