Budweiser Budvar was founded in 1895 as the Czech Joint Stock Brewery in České Budějovice (Budweis), continuing a brewing tradition dating back to 1265 when King Ottokar II granted the city brewing rights. The Budvar trademark was registered in 1930, and the brewery was nationalised in 1948. Today, it remains state-owned and is one of the few major Czech breweries still under local control. It has been engaged in trademark disputes with Anheuser-Busch since 1907, selling as Czechvar in the United States.

The brand's core products are Czech pale lagers, led by the flagship Budweiser Budvar Premium Lager, brewed with artesian well water, Moravian barley, and Saaz hops, then lagered for 90 days. Its portfolio also includes Budweiser Budvar Light Draft, Bud Super Strong, Budweiser Budvar Free (non-alcoholic), and Budweiser Budvar Dark Lager.
