Court TV is an American digital broadcast network and former cable television channel founded on July 1, 1991, by media entrepreneur Steven Brill. Originally established as a joint venture between Time Warner, Liberty Media, and NBC, the network was created to provide live gavel-to-gavel coverage of courtroom proceedings and true crime documentary programming. The brand achieved national prominence during landmark trials including the O.J. Simpson murder case and the Menendez brothers trial. In 2005, the network underwent a strategic split, branding daytime trial coverage as Court TV News with the slogan The Whole Truth, while primetime programming adopted the platform Seriously Entertaining. In 2006, Time Warner acquired full ownership and, in 2008, rebranded the cable channel as TruTV to target broader reality programming. The original Court TV identity was revived in 2019 when Katz Broadcasting (now Scripps Networks) launched a new digital multicast network, restoring the brand's focus on live trial coverage, legal analysis, and true crime content. Today, Court TV is available across cable, satellite, over-the-air, and streaming platforms, continuing its legacy as a dedicated destination for courtroom drama and criminal justice programming.
