📖 Branding Insight & Heritage:
Crayola traces its origins to 1885, when cousins Edwin Binney and C. Harold Smith formed Binney & Smith in New York City, producing red iron oxide pigment for barn paint and carbon black for automobile tires. In 1900, the company purchased a stone mill in Easton, Pennsylvania, and began producing slate pencils for schools. Recognising a need for safe, affordable drawing materials for children, Binney & Smith introduced the first box of eight Crayola crayons in June 1903, selling for a nickel. The name was coined by Edwin's wife Alice, combining the French word "craie" (chalk) with "ola" (oily). In 1984, the company became a wholly owned subsidiary of Hallmark Cards, and in 2007 it was renamed Crayola LLC to reflect its flagship brand.
The brand's core products are art supplies and creative materials, including crayons, coloured markers, paints, coloured pencils, modelling compounds, and craft kits. Its portfolio also encompasses Silly Putty, digital creativity platforms, and the immersive Crayola Experience attractions.
From its earliest tagline "Painting with Crayola" in 1903, the brand has evolved through slogans such as "Discover the Magic of Color" and "The Art of Childhood." Today, Crayola champions the philosophy of "It Starts Here" and "The Power of Creativity," reflecting a journey from a small pigment business to a global icon that inspires creative expression across all ages, producing over 3 billion crayons annually with 100% renewable energy.
