Pickfords traces its origins to 1646, when Thomas Pickford established a packhorse carrying business during the English Civil War. By 1756, the firm had expanded into London, and in 1817 Joseph Baxendale rescued it from bankruptcy, steering it through the canal and railway eras. The company pioneered motor transport in 1903 and heavy haulage in 1907, contributing to national efforts during both World Wars. After nationalisation in 1947 and privatisation under Margaret Thatcher, Pickfords was acquired by Allied Van Lines in 1996. In 2012, the UK arm was purchased by its directors following insolvency, and today it operates as part of Pickfords Move Management Ltd.

The brand's core products are relocation and storage services, including domestic removals, international moves, corporate relocations, and secure storage solutions. Its portfolio also encompasses pet shipping and specialist logistics for moving families and businesses across the globe.

From its earliest days as a packhorse carrier to becoming the world's largest moving company by 1989, Pickfords has built its reputation on reliability and heritage.
