SNK Corporation (株式会社SNK) was founded on 22 July 1978 by Eikichi Kawasaki in Osaka, Japan, as Shin Nihon Kikaku (New Japan Project). Initially producing pachinko and mahjong games, the company pivoted to arcade video games in the early 1980s, releasing hits such as Ozma Wars (1979) and Vanguard (1981). In 1990, SNK launched the Neo Geo arcade system and the Neo Geo AES home console—dubbed the "Rolls-Royce of video games" for its arcade-perfect graphics and $649 price tag. The 1990s golden era produced legendary franchises including The King of Fighters, Samurai Shodown, Metal Slug, and Fatal Fury. Financial troubles led to bankruptcy in 2001, acquisition by Aruze in 2003, and a 2004 restructuring as SNK Playmore. In 2015, Chinese company Leyou Technologies acquired a majority stake, and in 2016 the company returned to its original SNK Corporation name. In 2022, Saudi Arabia's MiSK Foundation (via Electronic Gaming Development Company) acquired a 96% stake, making SNK part of the kingdom's gaming investment strategy.
