The company was founded in 1938 and became part of the Distillers Company Ltd (DCL), the forerunner of Diageo, which was formed through the merger of major Scottish whisky interests in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Core offerings centred on blended Scotch whiskies, with Old Angus positioned alongside other R.H. Thomson blends such as Robbie Burns and Windsor Castle during the 1960s and 1970s. The brand was bottled at 40% ABV and was recognisable in its distinctive packaging during the era. R.H. Thomson & Co. held the licence for the Highland distillery of Teaninich, which DCL had acquired in 1933, giving the company access to quality single malt stocks for its blends.
