The Royal Bank of Scotland, commonly abbreviated as RBS, is one of the retail banking subsidiaries of NatWest Group plc, together with NatWest and Ulster Bank. Founded in 1727 by royal charter in Edinburgh, the bank issued its first banknotes the same year and granted the world's first overdraft in 1728. Throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, it expanded across Scotland and into England through strategic acquisitions. A landmark 1969 merger with the National Commercial Bank of Scotland created the modern institution and introduced its iconic daisy wheel logo.
