Dean Foods is an American food and beverage company founded in 1925 in Illinois as a small dairy producer in the Chicago area. It grew into the largest dairy company in the United States through decades of strategic acquisitions, including Mayfield Dairy, Garelick Farms, and Horizon Organic Dairy. In 2001, it merged with Suiza Foods to become the nation's leading fluid milk processor. The company pioneered milk packaging innovations, from waxed paper cartons in the 1930s to plastic jugs in the 1970s. In 2015, Dean united its regional brands under the national DairyPure label. Despite its dominance, the company struggled with declining milk consumption and rising costs, filing for bankruptcy in 2019. It was subsequently acquired by Dairy Farmers of America. Today, Dean Foods remains a symbol of American dairy industry consolidation and the enduring challenges of keeping a century-old tradition fresh in a changing market.
