Little Debbie traces its origins to 1933, when O.D. McKee began selling 5-cent snack cakes from the back of his 1928 Whippet car during the Great Depression. In 1934, he and his wife Ruth purchased a small failing bakery in Chattanooga, Tennessee, using the family car as collateral. The breakthrough came in 1935 when O.D. perfected the soft oatmeal cookie and created the Oatmeal Creme Pie—sandwiching two cookies with fluffy creme filling and selling them for a nickel each. In 1960, McKee Foods pioneered the "family pack" concept, and packaging supplier Bob Mosher suggested using a family member's name for the new brand. O.D. chose his 4-year-old granddaughter Debbie McKee, whose photo in a straw hat became the iconic logo illustrated by Pearl Mann. The first 12-count family pack sold for 49 cents, and over 14 million cakes were sold within the first 10 months. Today, Little Debbie is owned by the family-run McKee Foods Corporation, headquartered in Collegedale, Tennessee, and is one of America's most beloved snack cake brands.
