Fatburger Inc. is an American fast-casual restaurant chain founded in 1947 by Lovie Yancey and Charles Simpson in Los Angeles, California. Originally named "Mr. Fatburger," Yancey dropped the "Mr." in 1952 and built the brand on a simple, unwavering promise: hand-pressed, never-frozen burgers cooked fresh to order. The brand's enduring slogan, "The Last Great Hamburger Stand," captures its rebellious spirit and commitment to quality over speed. From a three-stool walk-up stand in South Central LA, Fatburger grew into a cultural icon, immortalised in songs by Ice Cube and The Notorious B.I.G. and frequented by celebrities from Ray Charles to Magic Johnson. Franchising began in 1981, and by 1985 it was ranked among America's fastest-growing burger chains. In 2018, Fatburger became the first national fast-casual chain to offer the plant-based Impossible Burger nationwide. Now owned by FAT Brands and operating over 200 locations across 20 countries, Fatburger remains a symbol of Black entrepreneurial excellence, West Coast flavour, and the enduring belief that a great burger is worth the wait.
